Earl Coffee stocks a full range of espresso tools from Timemore and zeroHero, including impact tampers, calibrated tampers, gravity distributors, WDT needle distribution tools and the Timemore Puck Espresso Accessories Sets. Products are available in 58.4mm for standard portafilters, 53mm for Sage and Breville machines, and 51mm for Delonghi.

An impact tamper uses a spring-loaded mechanism that releases at a set pressure, delivering a consistent tamp with a satisfying click. The zeroHero Sword and Timemore Impulse are both impact tampers. A calibrated tamper such as the Timemore Puck Calibrated Tamper also uses a spring mechanism that clicks at 14kg of pressure, standardising tamp pressure shot after shot. Both approaches eliminate the guesswork from tamping and improve extraction consistency.

A WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique) tool uses fine needles to break up clumps in the coffee puck before tamping. The zeroHero WDT Needle Distribution Tool and the Timemore Puck Orbital WDT Tool both work by stirring the grounds in the basket to create an even, clump-free bed, which reduces channelling and improves extraction consistency.

A gravity distributor sits on top of your portafilter and uses its own weight to level and distribute the coffee bed evenly before tamping. Both the zeroHero 58mm Gravity Distributor 2.0 and the Timemore Puck Gravity Distributor 58.4mm work this way. Used before tamping, a distributor helps to create a flat, even surface which reduces channelling and improves shot consistency. It is a worthwhile addition to any home espresso setup.

Most standard home espresso machines use a 58mm portafilter, which is compatible with the 58.4mm Timemore and zeroHero tools in the range. If you have a Sage or Breville machine, you will need the 53mm version. For Delonghi machines, the 51mm zeroHero Sword Espresso Impact Tamper is the compatible option. Good puck preparation — distributing, levelling and tamping the coffee evenly — is one of the most important factors in achieving a consistent, well-extracted espresso. Without it, water can find paths of least resistance through the puck, known as channelling, which results in uneven extraction and an unbalanced cup. Using a WDT tool, distributor and calibrated tamper together eliminates these variables and makes your workflow repeatable.
