First Impressions and Build Quality

Considering the price point, on first impressions, the DF54 is a very premium build, as is found with all of the DF grinders. A fully metal body not only gives the impression of durability, but provides it. There are more intricate models in terms of design on the market, so if style is the primary goal then the DF54 may not be for you, but the matte finish in either black, grey or silver provides a modern look, which most people find is suitable for their setup. The stainless steel finish looks and feels very premium. 

The hopper can fit enough beans for either a single cup worth of beans or a couple, and then the fit of the lid ensures that they are retained within the hopper throughout grinding. The plastic catch cup is securely sat underneath the chute and can then be transferred directly into a portafilter. 

Grinding Performance and Consistency

For most coffee enthusiasts, in terms of a DF54 review this is where the vital information will sit, and it largely comes down to the burrs. With a pre-calibrated 54mm stainless steel burr set and step less adjustment, this gives versatile grinding from fine for espresso to coarse for pour over and cold brew. Compared to similar price point grinders, typically they feature smaller or conical burrs which simply don’t perform to the same level. The burr set in the DF54 is renowned for a uniform particle distribution, which then provides a balanced coffee that is full of flavour. This consistency is maintained across different grind sizes, so you can experiment with your home brewing.

Whilst there are grinders on the market that cost several times more and that come with advanced features to really fine tune the grinding experience (including some within the DF range, such as the DF83V), for most home brewing, the DF54 provides a noticeable improvement in the cup quality, with more consistency between brews, less bitterness and more flavour extraction. 

Ease of Use and Adjustability

Next on our DF54 review is the ease of use and adjustability. The DF54 has a stepless adjustment, allowing for a really easy transition and highly precise grind size adjustments. This results in improved control overall and fantastic ease of use. 

Operating the grinder is really simple, you just add the beans to the hopper, select the grind size, and press the power button. The grind process is relatively quick and it isn’t as loud as some other lower price point models. With built in anti static technology, retention is reduced in the chute which many people find to be a fantastic feature. This helps with a smoother transition of grinds and overall a cleaner experience. 

In terms of maintenance, it’s very straightforward (see the full DF54 user manual). A dry brush can be used to remove any remaining grounds from the chute, or with a small hand vacuum cleaner. Far from entry level grinding, this model bridges the gap for people who may not be prepared to spend towards the higher end of the spectrum when it comes to electric grinders. Potential Drawbacks

A DF54 review wouldn’t be complete without looking at potential drawbacks, although here, there are very few. The DF54 does provide low retention, however this isn’t at an absolute zero as you may access with the higher price point models. Some of the elements are made with plastic which aesthetically some people may not be fond of, including the catch cup. In terms of noise, it’s not a silent grinder, although it doesn’t produce the noise that many at a similar price point do. The speed of grind is moderate, again you will find a faster grind speed with more expensive grinders.

Overall in terms of the DF54 review, whilst there are some drawbacks compared to more expensive models, this grinder is exceptional for the price point it offers.
